With the advent of the internet and the birth of the World Wide Web in 1991 dot-coms were also born. If in the previous article we saw what are the most visited websites in the world, in this one we will analyze the largest dot-com companies.
These are service companies that work and earn largely through web-related services. But what are the major companies in this industry? How have market capitalizations evolved from their advent to today?
Biggest Dot-com Companies
In the video below you can see the evolution of the largest Dot-com companies from 1998 to 2021. The data, in dollars, refers to the market capitalization of each company year by year.
In 2019, the company with the highest market capitalization turns out to be Amazon. Bezos’ company has in fact a figure that exceeds 800 billion dollars of capitalization. Following, not far away, we find Google that has a figure equal to almost 800 billion. Among the first 10 positions we also find Facebook, with a value of 478 billion, Alibanan with 459 billion. To follow, distanced but still in the top 10, Netflix, Sale Force and Paypal. This group of 3 has a value of over 100 billion in capitalization. Finally, to close the ranking, Booking Baidue and Ebay.
Over the past 20 years, many companies have emerged in this sector. In the video, however, it is interesting to note that some of these – which are currently in the top 10 – were already so 20 years ago. Among these, for example, Yahoo has been for many years the first company in the world for market capitalization. Among the top 10 in 1999 we also find Amazon (currently first) Ebay and Booking. Moreover, also in 1999, Lycos, Infospace and others were present. In general the market capitalization of these companies is much lower than today.
