Top 10 Search Engines in History

Google, Bing, Baidu, Yahoo. These are just a few of the major search engines where hundreds of millions of people search for information around the world on a daily basis. With the birth of the World Wide Web in the 1990s, the first search engine was also created. Alan Emtage with Peter Deutsch and Bill Heelan were the first in the world to create a search engine: Archi. In today’s article we will go over the history of search engines and see what are the top 10 search engines.

The History of Search Engines

The creation of the first search engines stems from two major steps. The first was the birth of the Internet in the late 1960s with the creation of ARPANET, and later in 1991 with the creation of the World Wide Web. The world’s first search engine was Archie. The operation of Archie is obviously very different to today’s search engines such as Google. In fact, Archie allowed searches for files through FTP servers that were, however, anonymous, and it was made before the WWW.

Archie Query Form – 1990

The first search engine for the Web was actually Aliweb. Announced in 1993 and then launched into the market in 1994 it allowed website owners to put descriptions on pages that could be used by end users for searching. By 1993 the number of sites already in the world was 600 and there were about 10 million glboal users. Aliweb preceded by a few months the launch of another major search engine, WebCrawler, which was launched on April 20, 1994. Unlike Aliweb, WebCrawler was the first search engine for the Web capable of providing users with “full text” search. As early as November of that year, 1994, WebCrawler had anlized one million search queries.
