The podcast market is growing steadily. In the US alone, it is estimated that the number of users listening to podcasts will grow from 46.1 million in 2017 to over 100 million in 2024. While the podcasting market was known to less than 50$ of Americans in 2015, it is now known to almost eight out of ten people. But what are the most popular podcasts?

But which are the most popular podcast platforms? The most popular platform for listening to podcasts in the United States in 2020 was Spotify. In a study published by emarketer, on a sample of over 2000 respondents, Spotify was chosen by 25% of respondents. This is up from 19% the previous year. In 2019, the number one platform for podcast listening was Apple Podcasts with 21% of the total. In 2020, this dropped by one percentage point to be overtaken by Spotify. In third place among the most used podcast platforms is Google Podcast, which rose from 9% in 2019 to 16% in 2020. This was followed by Pandora with 15%, websites with 11%, Audible and NPR one.

Podcast popularity by country

If the podcast phenomenon is increasingly global, which are the countries in the world where most podcasts are listened to? Among the top countries is Sweden with 47% of users having listened to at least one podcast in the last 12 months. Other countries in the world include Ireland, and Brazil where the listening figure is over 40%. Other nationalities where podcasts are strong are the United States and Canada. In the United States, more than one in three Americans has listened to at least one podcast in the last 12 months. The UK also has a very high figure of 31%. Countries above 30% include Australia, Taiwan, Portugal and Spain, etc.
