The evolution of computer sales from 1999 to 2020

In 1999 the best-selling computer brand in the US was “Compaq”. With 12% of the total sales market this company, founded in 1982 and later becoming one of the brands of the multinational Hewlett-Packard, was the largest supplier of computers worldwide. In 2001 this company had reached over 63 employees.

Over the years, the top companies by computer sales became DELL and HP. These two companies for almost all of the 2000s have in fact remained in the top two positions. Only from 2008 onwards has there been the advancement of Acer, which in the first half of 2008 had a market share of over 12% of total computers sold.

From 2012 onwards it was the year of Lenov which has been leading the ranking for over 8 years followed by HP. From 2014 onwards, the well-known brand of Apple has also entered the ranking.

PC sales in the world

Having seen the top brands in terms of sales, let’s now look at the number of total sales. How many PCs are sold worldwide? And how have sales changed from 1996 to 2019? Thanks to the data on https://www.gartner.com/, reworked for this article, you can see the trend over the last 25 years. Compared to 70.9 units, in the millions, in 2019 we have gone to 261.2. An acrescence of almost 300%. But which in reality, if analyzed in a more complex way, shows that from 2012 onwards there has been a slowdown in sales. From the peak of 2011, with 352.8 units (in millions), we went to 259.4 in 2018. A decline that only stopped in 2019 with +0.6% year-over-year growth. It will be interesting to see in the coming days the trend in 2020.
